4th March 2026
On the occasion of World Obesity Day, the Malta Association of Public Health Medicine (MAPHM) calls for strengthened action on obesity prevention and improved access to tailored, person-centered services for individuals living with overweight and obesity in Malta.
Obesity is a complex, chronic disease influenced by biological, environmental, social and behavioural determinants. It is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and reduced quality of life. Addressing obesity requires coordinated, sustained, and evidence-based public health strategies.
Prevention Must Start Early
MAPHM emphasizes that prevention remains the cornerstone of tackling obesity. Action is required across the life course, including:
- Supporting healthy nutrition and physical activity from early childhood
- Strengthening school-based health promotion programmes
- Creating environments that make healthy choices accessible and affordable
- Addressing commercial and social determinants that drive unhealthy
consumption patterns
Population-level measures, alongside community engagement and health literacy initiatives, are essential to reduce future disease burden.
Tailor-Made Services for People Living with Obesity
While prevention is critical, MAPHM stresses that individuals already living with overweight or obesity require structured, multidisciplinary, and personalized care.
Obesity management should include:
- Comprehensive medical assessment
- Individualized nutrition counselling
- Behavioural and psychological support where indicated
- Physical activity plans adapted to ability and health status
- Management of obesity-related comorbidities
Care pathways must be evidence-based, non-stigmatizing, and designed around the needs of the individual. Obesity is not a personal failure but a medical condition that deserves professional support and compassion.
Reducing Stigma and Strengthening Policy
MAPHM also calls for continued efforts to reduce weight stigma in healthcare settings and society at large. Public health policy must balance prevention, regulation, clinical services, and community empowerment.
On World Obesity Day, MAPHM reiterates its commitment to supporting policies and services that prevent obesity, promote healthier environments, and ensure equitable access to quality care for all.
