Ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31st, we are highlighting the changing face of tobacco and nicotine use. We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the Group Coaching Sessions organised by the Malta Association of Public Health Medicine (MAPHM) as part of the project “Upskilling the Public Health Community for Future Challenges”. The Malta Association of Public Health Medicine is calling on Malta’s political parties to come together around a shared vision for healthier communities, stronger systems, and long-term resilience. Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death, with over seven million deaths each year. A growing concern is rising nicotine addiction among youths, driven by appealing products like flavoured e-cigarettes. Is the market shaping our health… more than we realize? 🧠💰 The recent declaration by the MAP (Maltese Association of Psychiatry) opposes any involvement of organisations linked to cannabis use in sponsoring nurseries or initiatives for socially disadvantaged children. While investment in children’s wellbeing, inclusion, and development is strongly supported, such efforts should remain independent of substances shown to harm young people. Evidence links cannabis exposure in children and adolescents to neurodevelopmental, cognitive, and mental health risks, and associating youth-focused activities with it risks normalising harm. Children’s sport and recreational spaces must remain safe, neutral, and firmly health‑promoting. MAPHM is calling for the introduction of random roadside testing for alcohol and drugs in Malta. The current suspicion-based system allows impaired drivers to go undetected, putting lives at risk. MAPHM urges immediate legislative reform to implement high-visibility, evidence-based testing to deter dangerous driving and protect all road users. 🔔 Merry Christmas from all of us at MAPHM! 🎄 1 day till Christmas! 🎄
