The Malta Association of Public Health Medicine (MAPHM) condemns, without reservations, the horrendous murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia last week and, on behalf of its members, offers its sincere condolences to her family.

MAPHM wishes to underline the importance of upholding governance and the rule of law as well as ensuring that these are also perceived by society to be functioning well. Malta has registered significant achievements in improving health and well-being of the population over the past two decades. These gains can easily be lost and reversed. Strengthening the governance of our institutions and updating them to meet today’s needs is an important foundation to ensure that our population lives in a fair, just, serene and secure environment. These, in turn, impact positively on health and well-being.

MAPHM calls upon all those in positions of power to place the well-being of the Maltese population and common good before self-serving interests and to turn this tragic event that has touched the whole country into an opportunity to work together and bring about the necessary lasting changes that will see the country emerge stronger.
